About the role
It’s an exciting time to work at Nelson City Council as the City continues to grow and thrive. This role provides day to day leadership and operational management of our small, professional City Development team. Our team undertakes strategic planning for future housing and business growth, tracks population growth, housing demand and capacity, works to increase housing capacity, and leads projects that focus on development and activation of Nelson City.
We’ve lots of interesting projects in housing, growth and city centre development, such as the Achilles Avenue and Rutherford Street Social and Affordable Housing Development and the implementation of the Nelson City Centre Spatial Plan - Te Ara ō Whakatū. This plan is an ambitious 30-year vision, which weaves together Council’s planning, housing and infrastructure work, and aims to transform our city centre into a people-focused place, full of green spaces, where more people live, businesses thrive, and visitors want to linger longer.
About you
You’ll be a natural leader with strong people skills and the ability to build solid relationships with a wide range of people. Your previous experience in housing, urban growth planning, and urban design/city activation will ensure you quickly become a trusted expert to our Senior Leadership Team and Council.
You’ll enjoy using your strong facilitation and presentation skills to effectively lead community engagement and other consultation processes so together we can make a real difference in the heart of Nelson city.
Excellent time management skills, political savviness, and the ability to connect with people on all levels, are essential.

This is a full-time, permanent role with a salary range of $107,000-$118,700.
