Principal Planner Resource Consents

  • Technical Resource Consents expertise
  • Lifestyle opportunity
  • Make a positive difference to the region and community

As the result of a colleague's retirement, we have an excellent opportunity for you to draw upon your technical resource consents expertise and leadership ability. While the role does not have any direct reports, as a technical leader you will have plenty of scope to share your knowledge and experience, and contribute to the ongoing growth and development of the whole team.

The dedicated Resource Consents team continue to process a large number of diverse notified and non-notified consents; ranging from waterfront and inner city apartments, housing developments, water permits, air and coastal discharges with complex science components, earthworks and subdivisions, through to the more conventional consents.

Reporting to a highly experienced and supportive Team Leader, you will be the subject matter expert and technical lead for the more complex consents.  You will contribute to the continuous improvement of our internal operating procedures to ensure legislative compliance and best practice processing.  Therefore it is essential that you can demonstrate your breadth and depth of technical expertise as this is a fast paced environment.  We are seeking a Principal who enjoys working at pace, shows initiative and takes responsibility for delivering results in a customer centric environment.

In your cover letter please outline your skills, knowledge and experience of the following:

  • Advanced knowledge of the RMA and other legislative frameworks that underpin consent hearing processes and procedures
  • Experience in the preparation and presentation of expert witness evidence
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; strong stakeholder engagment and relationship management
  • Sound judgement and problem solving
  • Tertiary qualification and relevant professional membership

This is a challenging and rewarding role  which would suit a Principal Planner already operating at this level, or for an experienced Senior Planner (ready to step up or wanting a broader focus), who possesses the mix of technical and leadership skills essential for success.

In return, we offer an enjoyable, rewarding, friendly and flexible work environment, with generous leave provisions.

Nelson City Council is an organisation filled with supportive people who enjoy working and playing in this Smart Little City and the wider region. We have amazing weather, good schools, and gorgeous natural environment to play in;  it’s a great place for all ages.
