Legal Adviser - Intermediate or Senior level (part time 20 hours per week)

  • Do you have a special interest in contracts and procurement law?
  • Is location, lifestyle and work/life balance important to you?
  • Join our small, professional in-house team

We’re expanding our Legal Services team and have a rare opportunity for an in-house legal professional to join us in this part-time, 20-hour per week position.

Based in Nelson and reporting to our Senior Legal Adviser, you will provide high quality legal support and advice in contract and procurement matters, while also supporting all aspects of Nelson City Council’s activities and business.

As a qualified and experienced contract and procurement lawyer, you will be a pragmatic problem solver, bring strong communication skills and create great relationships across the organisation and with external legal providers to ensure the best outcomes for Council.

While you’ll be focused in the contract and procurement space, you’ll also have the opportunity to provide advice across a broad range of areas, such as local government law, public and administrative law, official information and privacy law, property law and regulatory and enforcement matters.

Your experience in local or central government is ideal but not essential, and you must be eligible to hold a practising certificate. In return for your legal expertise and experience, we offer you a varied and challenging work programme, flexibility and work life balance. We are open to whichever days and hours per day you’d like to work.

The Nelson region is vibrant with a strong cultural, art and events focus. With stunning beaches, a playground of mountain bike tracks and walkways, coupled with high sunshine hours, it’s a perfect city to balance a career with a great lifestyle.
