  • Champion our environmental planning and city development functions
  • Influential role with meaningful impact within our city and the region
  • Lead a professional team of technical experts

About the role

It’s an exciting time for an experienced people leader to join our professional team of technical experts. Reporting to the Group Manager Environmental Management, you’ll lead two dedicated teams responsible for environmental planning and city development functions.

Our Environmental Planning team develops, changes and reviews our resource management policies, plans and environmental bylaws with a focus on improving Nelson’s future in terms of environmental protection and enhancement, climate change resilience, and the supply of land for housing and business development in the region.

Our City Development team undertakes strategic planning for future housing and business growth, tracks population growth, housing demand and capacity, works to increase housing capacity and leads projects that focus on development and activation of Nelson City.

From consulting on Plan Change 29, which is the biggest housing plan change that we’ve ever done as a Council, to implementing exciting projects in housing, growth and city development like the Nelson City Centre Spatial Plan - Te Ara ō Whakatū and the Future Development Strategy, we’ve a very interesting and diverse workload to offer!

About You

You’ll be a recognised leader with technical experience in resource management plan processes, and a strength in housing provision, urban development and capacity planning, urban design or city activation. Ideally, you’ll also have experience determining processes under the Resource Management Act and Local Government Act. Your strong technical knowledge and sound judgement will ensure you quickly build credibility at governance and senior management level.

You’ll have a flair for leading people and embracing change. Our people are all at differing stages in their career and will highly value your mentoring and coaching style. Your excellent communication and relationship management skills will enable you to quickly build positive working relationships with internal teams, external partners, Māori and iwi.

Your people focus, political acumen, high level of resilience, and ability to engage with our community, will enable us to deliver great outcomes for the Nelson region.

What we offer

In return for bringing your skills, knowledge and experience to us, you will be rewarded with a competitive salary, generous leave provisions, some flexibility to work from home and ongoing personal and professional development in an inclusive and supportive work environment.

You will be welcomed by your peers in the Environmental Management Group who are a dynamic, supportive and friendly bunch, and enjoy working with each other to make a positive difference across our region.

This is a full-time, permanent position with a salary range of $150,000-$166,000 pa.
